Perth Gay Bashings: Sentencing

Update on the January Perth gay bashings: Two men found guilty of luring gay men to isolated locations using Grindr and then bashing them have been sentenced to jail.

  • James Joseph Katchan, found guilty of all five attacks, has been sentenced to six years in prison and will be elegible for parole after four.
  • Cody Parkinson, who was involved in the last attack, has been jailed for two years and will be elegible for parole.

I’m pleasantly surprised at the amount of jail time Katchan received. After all, this is a country where the excuse of a “tough upbringing” can be used to reduce sentences on rape, Apex gang members are allowed to go on holiday while on bail and drink drivers can kill with no consequence. Two other men have been charged, trial pending. Hopefully by the time they are brought to court the failing United Nations would have finally collapsed and we can just ignore that pesky Convention Against Torture.
